Dr. Robert R. Cargill's New Book "Qumran through (Real) Time" Released
July 6, 2009 - Dr. Robert Cargill's book Qumran through (Real) Time: A Virtual Reconstruction of Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls was released today by Gorgias Press. The volume is Cargill's revised 2008 UCLA dissertation, which was a study of the use of digital archaeological reconstruction and virtual reality to reconstruct Khirbet Qumran, the site on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea associated with the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The book is the first in a new Gorgias Press series entitled "Bible in Technology." Bibliographic data is as follows:

Dr. Robert R. Cargill named UCLA Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Research Associate
June 21, 2009 - Dr. Cargill was named a 2009-10 UCLA Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Research Associate. Cargill, who earned his Ph.D. at UCLA will continue his association with the Institute of Archaeology in his new position as Instructional Technology Coordinator for the UCLA Center for Digital Humanities.
Dr. Robert R. Cargill to Teach Summer Course on Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls at Portland State
June 15-18, 2009 - Dr. Cargill will be teaching a one week intensive course on "Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls" for the Judaic Studies program at Portland State University. Course Description: (10:30 am - 12:50 pm MTWTh) This course provides an intensive introduction to the most important archaeological discovery of the twentieth century—the library of documents discovered in caves on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea—and explores how the contents of these manuscripts influence our understanding of ancient and modern Judaism and Christianity. This course surveys significant scrolls, the sectarian concepts discussed withing them, and their historical context.
The Duke Symposium on Archaeology and the Media
Apr. 23-24, 2009 - Dr. Cargill will be attending the Duke Symposium on Archaeology and the Media in Raleigh, NC (flyer). The Duke Symposium will explore the often-strained relations between archaeologists and the media and the concomitant impact on local communities in the United States and the Middle East. Specifically, the conference will investigate the methods and values of media representation and those of archaeological investigation, as well as the effects of archaeological excavation and media coverage on the scholarly world, local inhabitants, and American faith communities. Ultimately, the symposium intends to outline better methods of communication between archaeologists, media representatives, and non-specialist audiences. Co-sponsored by the Center for Jewish Studies, the Department of Religion, the Graduate Program in Religion, the Arts and Sciences Committee on Faculty Research, the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute, and the American Schools of Oriental Research.
Robert R. Cargill to Lecture On Virtual Qumran

Dr. Robert R. Cargill to speak at Panel on Social Justice, Racism, and Homophobia
Mar. 24, 2009 - Dr. Cargill will be a part of a panel discussion entitled, "Promoting Social Justice: Confronting Racism and Homophobia" at the Pepperdine University West Los Angeles Campus at the Howard Hughes Center. The panel will discuss efforts to bring about better dialogue and understanding between people of different races, religions, gender, and sexual orientation. Qumran Digital Model Nears Completion
Mar. 20, 2008 - The Qumran Digital Model is nearing completion and will soon be available to the public for download free of charge. The Qumran Digital Model is a realtime, virtual reconstruction of the archaeological remains of Khirbet Qumran, the site asociated with the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The model is one of the results of a research project at the UCLA Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, and is based upon several years of research into the archaeology of Qumran.
Robert Cargill to Lecture to LA Biblical Archaeological Society
Apr. 13, 2007 - Virtual Qumran architect and designer, Robert R. Cargill, will lecture to the Southern California chapter of the Biblical Archaeology Society in UCLA's Virtual Portal, located on the 5th floor of the Math Science Building (map) on the Westwood campus. Virtual Qumran Project Nears Launch
Mar. 1, 2007 - The Qumran Visualization Project continues its preparation for its June 29, 2007 launch at the San Diego Natural History Museum.
